The live gig at the Venue was recorded in the summer of 1980, while UB40 were signed to Graduate Records.
The band and the record company - headed by David Virr, who launched the band, were both so busy during those heady days that the tapes lay in the Graduate offices unnoticed until 2006. David found them, and decided to see if they could be salvaged. He called me in to work on the project, and after many hours of digitizing and mixing, I was able to present the recording as it deserves to be heard.
David was pleased, but was not able to be here for the release, as he died on December the 26th 2006. His widow Tina Virr is heading his business now, and has released the album through EMI/Virgin as a memorial to her late husband.
The tracks are a fine tribute to the members of the band, as they confirm their status as probably the best reggae band of all time. I really enjoyed working on the album, and am delighted with the result. I do hope the band will reform and continue giving us their wonderful music. In the meantime, this recording of a fresh new band on the scene at the time, serves as a testament to their timeless talent.
